Background
Why cats and dogs? Jean Paul Olive explains, "because there is no lawsuit with animals." Jean has been a photographer for 28 years, since the age of 24, with a philosophy of "no sex, no trouble, no war." His subject is the street, the theatre of the street, where the actors are the "lovers, kids, reading people, cats and dogs." "My life is only black and white photo," Jean says, "straight on the Leica M3, 50mm, and Kodak Tri-X." Jean has been a photographer for the RIP in Arles, a photography professor, a photo-journalist for New Agency of Journalist Associated, and now a freelance. With a total of ten books published (six in B&W, four in color), he has another one in black and white printing in France for next year. A sensible man, Jean does not believe in social class, elitist nation or the great race. His happiness: "don't talk, let's go." His favorite proverb: "listen and disobey." His dispostion: "optimistic." In his words, what photography is - "it is like love: it is better to do, but no talking!" Jean is now looking for a book editor for this project. You can contact him through us at editorial@hobokenalmanac.com. If you have any question for comments, please e-mail us at editorial@hobokenalmanac.com. |

| The Almanac Gallery of Photography is a division of Hoboken Almanac of
Phtography. It is a gallery that will be open by appointment only, except on
Saturday afternoons, when it will be open to the public. The purpose of this
gallery is to educate and give young and unrecoginized photographers, as well
as the more seasoned and experienced ones, a forum to show their work.
There will be a new show opening every month, and the openings of the exhibitions are by invitation only. Hoboken is a uniquely appropriate place for this gallery since is was this town that was the early home of two legendary American photographers - Alfred Stieglitz and Dorothea Lang, as well as one Benedict J. Fernandez, the founder of the Hoboken Almanac of Photography and the gallery, who started his life in Hoboken at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard as a crane operator. The Almanac Gallery of Photography is located at 1252 Garden Street (corner of 13th Street), Hoboken, New Jersey, 07030. It is open on Saturdays, from 1PM to 6PM. Open other times by appointment. Call 201-865-6997 or fax 201-865-5493. |
