Return to Hoboken Almanac
As founder of the Hoboken Almanac of Photography, it gives me the great pleasure to announce the opening of the Almanac Gallery of Photography. Even though Hoboken Almanac is primarily a web magazine, there is still a need for "up close and personal" viewing of photographs.

The gallery will open formally on October 10th, 2002 with an exhibition by a German photographer, Jürgen Wassmuth. The show is titled "Moscow - New York: Russian Soul and American Spirit" and will be on view until the beginning of November.

Come and visit.

Sincerely,
Ben Fernandez

MOSCOW - NEW YORK
American Spirit and Russian Soul
by Jürgen Wassmuth

An exhibition at the Almanac Gallery of Photography.

The two world metropolises at the end of the 20th century in black-and-white pictures.

"Wassmuth's picture compositions are true 'eye-catchers', they are views which can and should lead to insight and understanding."
(Leica Gallery Vol.2).

On the one hand there is New York - fascinating symbol of creativity, fast life and restlessness. On the other hand there is Moscow, historically upheaval towards a political reformation in Europe. From today's point of view it becomes obvious that these pictures show conditions and atmospheres of the two world-cities at the end the century, that are the respective hearts of their social hemispheres and political systems. Even without regards to the political background of the two former superpowers it remains a strange impression of similarities and connections.

"It is quite clear where Jürgen Wassmuth stands with his free work. He is looking for a personal viewpoint in the true sense of the word the individual perspective, the fresh, new look at that which is familiar to us." (Leica gallery, Vol.2).

The photographs will be presented in an exhibition of 50 pictures (25 NY, 25 Moscow).

Later this exhibition is planned to be shown in Germany at the American and Russian Embassies.

This exhibition is curated by Marco Prinz and Marita Theiling.
The Almanac Gallery of Photography is a division of Hoboken Almanac of Phtography. It is a gallery that will be open by appointment only, except on Saturday afternoons, when it will be open to the public. The purpose of this gallery is to educate and give young and unrecoginized photographers, as well as the more seasoned and experienced ones, a forum to show their work.

There will be a new show opening every month, and the openings of the exhibitions are by invitation only.

Hoboken is a uniquely appropriate place for this gallery since is was this town that was the early home of two legendary American photographers - Alfred Stieglitz and Dorothea Lang, as well as one Benedict J. Fernandez, the founder of the Hoboken Almanac of Photography and the gallery, who started his life in Hoboken at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard as a crane operator.

The Almanac Gallery of Photography is located at 1252 Garden Street (corner of 13th Street), Hoboken, New Jersey, 07030. It is open on Saturdays, from 1PM to 6PM. Open other times by appointment. Call 201-865-6997 or fax 201-865-5493.
